Old Fashioned Lilac Shrub (1-2ft)

Original price was: $19.99.Current price is: $14.99.

Old Fashioned Lilac have an other-worldly charm about them. Their fragrance is a little intoxicating and is one that lilac lovers look forward to every single year. I guess that’s why so many perfume makers love to use their flower power.

Not to be outdone, the large number of purple panicle blooms themselves will grab your attention just as much as the scent. It’s a tough call which is more spectacular. Those heart-shaped leaves are pretty amazing too. If you can, I highly recommend planting one of these near a patio, sitting area, or open window for your home so that you can enjoy all the beauty your senses can stand .🌸 Do keep in mind that lilacs need a little adjustment period once planted. It can take them a couple of years to bloom. This is completely normal.

From late fall to early spring, these will be shipped dormant (no leaves) and bare root (minimal dirt and no pot). Please see the last 2 photos as examples of what you will receive. With good care, these will wake up and leaf out come spring!

🌸 THE BEST cut flowers for floral arrangements
✅ Zones 3-7 (8 is possible but not always ideal for blooms)
✅ Mature size (average) is 8-15 feet tall and 6-12 feet wide
✅ Needs full sun (6+ hours daily)
✅ Needs neutral to alkaline soil (never acidic), well-draining and rich (compost, etc)
✅ Keep consistently moist the first year while getting established especially.
✅ Apply fertilizer once or twice in spring. Espoma Organic Bone Meal is an excellent choice due to its higher amounts of phosphorous (for blooms) and less nitrogen.
✅ Blooms in Spring — typically around May but this can vary a little
✅ Prune lilacs after they finish blooming in the spring to encourage blooms in the upcoming seasons. It’s also a good time to cut off dead or damaged limbs
✅ Lilacs are prone to pests and disease. Spraying with horticultural oil can help protect them
✅ Avoid overcrowding and spots with inadequate sun. This leads to powdery mildew and disease
✅ Susceptible to late spring frost damage. Wind protection can help with this a lot!
✅ New lilac shoots will grow from the base of these so you may need to remove them or use those for planting in new locations or gifting to friends!
✅ Lilacs make excellent wind-breaks and barrier hedges when planted in groups
✅ Moderately fast grower — can be up to 2 feet per year!
✅ Fluff the ground soil when planting, add a little peat moss, compost, and maybe even some mycorrhizae (we love the Bigfoot brand) to the planting hole to get your lilac off to a great start!

In colder zones (if your ground is already frozen), it’s best to pot these up now and keep them in a cool basement, garage, or other unheated space that will stay above freezing but help keep the plant dormant. Water 2-3 times per week the first week. Keep consistently moist after. Gradually “harden off” outdoors by slowly increasing the amount of time in the sun and plant once the ground is no longer frozen in the spring. Mulching helps insulate the roots and retain moisture as well.

If you live in a warmer zone where the ground is not yet frozen, you can go ahead and plant these now while dormant so they can get established. A couple inches of mulching is needed here as well. If the ground is frozen, treat it as you would in the colder zones by potting it up and waiting until early spring.

If you have any questions, I’m here to help the best I can! As a small family nursery, my goal is to offer the “personal touch” to show you that we care about your business. Customer service, and your support, sincerely matter to us. Thanks for looking!

➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
