Our Story

About

Just the two of us…

Hey there! We are Bill and Holly, partners in life and in business.

I guess you could say that working with plants is in our blood. We both come from farming families and we both deeply love the beauty of nature. It’s where we feel most alive.

Bill began his journey as a young teen into his early 20’s working at several Eastern Shore nurseries. It was there he fell in love with the feel of dirt in his hands and the reward for his labor being a happy, healthy plant. As an avid reader, he loves learning new plant care techniques and sharing that knowledge. He’s also quite professional at the skill of weed-pullin’, if I do say so myself!

Holly always admired plants, and nature in general, but was never really responsible for their care. Now, she’s learning, growing (just like the nursery name suggests!), and enjoying the ride. She’s especially fascinated by the process of propagation. It’s nothing short of magical to see a simple stick transform into a full-grown life ready for years of enjoyment. She sure does wish her magic wand could make those hot summer months disappear off the calendar, though! 🙂

In our opinion, working with plants can teach you a whole lot about the right way to live life! There’s no doubt, we reap what we sow; the kind of seeds we plant in our lives and the lives around us is what we will get in return.

As followers of Christ, we believe growth starts with a single seed of change. As we nurture that new growth, allowing our roots to continue going deeper into the good ground of God’s love, we begin to produce the character and Christ-likeness we are called to as believers. The more we grow in Him, the more beautiful we become; just like the incredible plants we have the joy of working with at our nursery.

In fact, that’s how the name, “The Growing Guys,” was born. We’re growing plants, of course, but we are also growing as people first in all the ways that truly matter.

Who are “The Growing Guy’s?”

The Growing Guys is a fully legal, licensed, and inspected, small (but growing!) homegrown nursery in Accomack County, Virginia. We do our best to offer a little something for everyone in every price range. Shopping with us you’ll find edibles, native plants, ornamental trees, or shrubs, both young and old!

Do you specialize in something?

We don’t really specialize in any particular types of plants, but we do focus primarily on young plants you can nurture and grow to full maturity. The biggest reason? We can pass on the cost savings to you, our customers! Young plants cost much less than those we have grown for many years.

We are also paying attention to what y’all request most. If you love it, we want to have it. That’s why we are expanding our native plant selection and also certain ornamentals that are in popular demand!

Why should you choose us?

Everything we grow is grown with love in the most organic way possible. We believe in protecting our pollinators and our environment. To do this, we use organic pest control methods and environmentally friendly fertilizers for the health of your new plant and the earth God blessed us with.

What we lack in volume, we strive to make up for with the personal touch. We don’t claim to be the ‘know it all plant experts’ by any stretch of the imagination, but we do care, and we do want to see you happy with your new plant purchase from us.

Since we are a small family ‘backyard grower’ nursery, you can reach out to us with your special requests for plants. If we are able to get it for you, we will. We are also open to working with landscapers as well. Please reach out on the “contact us” page if you’re interested.

And, as you can see, we have the best nursery helpers around! That’s our tuxedo girl, Muppet when she was a kitten. She is one of four rescues now in our home who stole our hearts.

Well, at least the more glamorous, picture-worthy side of things. We try to ignore the weeds we are constantly at war with around here. You know how that goes!
