Betsy Ross Lilac (White)

$24.95

The Betsy Ross Lilac is truly a one-of-a-kind, harder-to-find variety. Not all lilacs can be grown in warmer climates but she can be! This was the first lilac release from the U.S. National Arboretum, specifically developed for its disease resistance (like powdery mildew) in warmer climates and for its gorgeous rounded shape and fluffy, profuse white flowering habit. She’s a winner!

***Note: From late winter to early spring, lilacs are dormant (no leaves) and will be shipped bare root with minimal to no dirt. Please see the last 2 photos for a reference of overall size, roots, and dormancy. These are an example of what you will receive. Thanks!

Is the Betsy Ross Lilac right for you?

**** Important note: Sorry, No Sales to Western, Territories, or Phyto-certificate states due to shipping restrictions in your state (Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho)

If you adore lilacs and always wanted to grow them, but live in zone 8, or didn’t think you had the ‘green thumb’ for them, the Betsy Ross lilac is for you! She’s much more resistant to disease than other lilac varieties and does very well in warm climates. Another glowing feature of this stunning white lilac is how she lights up the twilight hours with a literal glow that many often lovingly refer to as the “moonlight garden” with her bright white blooms.

Best of all, this lilac can be a little harder to find so you won’t see it growing in every yard of your neighborhood!

✅ Botanical name: Syringa x oblata ‘Betsy Ross’

✅ Zones: 3-8

✅ Mature size: 8-12 feet tall and 10-13 feet wide, growing around 1-2 feet per year.

✅ Profuse white blooms appear in early April. When not in bloom, the vibrant green leaves and rounded shape make for an attractive bush even in summer.

✅ Sun: Full sun at least 2/3 of the day

✅ Soil: Well-draining is very important. Fertile and organically rich is also important so adding compost and mycorrhizae is excellent. Neutral pH is preferred. If your soil is too acidic, you may need to add lime to neutralize it.

✅ Water: Waterly deeply and at least 1-2 per week (if no rain) during the first year to get the roots well established. After that, less may be required, except during the flowering period and during especially hot and dry months. Check the soil. If the top couple of inches are dry, it’s time to water.

✅ Pruning: Right after flowering is best.

✅ Fertilizer: We love Espoma Organic Bone Meal applied at least once in early spring

✅ Because these are early spring bloomers, avoid planting these where light will reflect against a building (white siding) to prevent early budding, or where late spring frosts will damage the buds. If your area is prone to late spring frosts, a covering may be needed for protection.

🌸 These are glorious as cut flowers for indoor flower arrangements.

🐇 🦌 These show very strong rabbit and deer resistance.

🦋 🐝 🐦‍⬛ Excellent for wildlife and for pollinators. They will love you for planting a Betsy Ross lilac in your landscape.

✅ Do keep in mind that lilacs can take a few years to get established before they bloom. This is normal. They like to be well-grounded before showing off.

This one is a wonderful treat that you will look forward to every single year. Be sure to plant near a window, patio, or lounging area, where you can enjoy the heavenly fragrance these blooms create.

➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
