For low-maintenance color in any landscape, Lynwood Gold Forsythia is about as close to perfect as you can get! These are fast-growing bushes that are perfect for hedge rows. Ours are currently 1-2 feet tall, young plants, that are ready to thrive. Best of all, even when not in bloom, these showy shrubs are still very nice with their vibrant green summer leaves that turn yellow with purple hints in fall. Their moment to shine is definitely their late winter/early spring blooms, though.
✅ Botanical name: Forsythia x intermedia ‘Lynwood Variety’
✅ Zones: 5-8
✅ Mature size: 6-10 feet tall and wide. The growth rate is pretty fast.
✅ Spacing: If you are planting multiple of these for use in a hedge row, space these about 4-6 feet apart for the best appearance.
✅ Light requirements: 6+ hours of direct sun daily
✅ Soil: Well-draining but tolerant of even poor soils.
✅ Water: Once or twice weekly watering, if no rain or snow. Can be drought tolerant once established (after the first year or two)
✅ Pruning: These bushes do best if cut back a bit right after spring flowering. Pruning after July will cause a loss of flower buds for the next spring. You can even cut these back to several inches from the ground to rejuvenate them and encourage healthier shape and branching.
✅ Fertilize in early spring with a balanced (i.e. 10-10-10), slow-release fertilizer for best results.
✅ Forsythia does ‘sucker,’ meaning it does tend to spread. You can remove the sucker plants to control this pretty easily, though. This spreading tendency makes them ideal for shrub borders, however.
✅ Forsythia is mostly pest and disease-free and is resistant to deer, salt, urban pollution, and even drought once established. That’s what gives this beautiful bush its low-maintenance reputation.
🐦⬛ Even though Forsythia doesn’t really produce much nectar for bees and other pollinators, it is an excellent cover for birds and their nests. We often see many birds nesting in ours. They love the dense cover from the elements of nature.
This is a top choice for many homeowners for good reason. It’s just so easy to care for and it offers color and beauty in your landscape when few other plants have awakened for the year. It’ll make you smile every single time with its cheery yellow color.

➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
