Blueberry lovers, if you live in a warmer climate where winters are mild, you know that so many varieties just aren’t available to you for successful fruiting. Well, SunshineBlue blueberries change all that. These delicious blueberries require only 150 chill hours to bear fruit. That makes this Southern Highbush blueberry a reliable producer where others just can’t.
✅ Botanical name: Vaccinium x ‘Sunshine Blue’ (Southern Highbush)
✅ Zones: 5 or 6-10
✅ Mature size: 3-4 feet tall and wide with a fairly quick growth rate
✅ Light requirements: Full sun (8+ hours of direct sun daily). In very hot summer climates, a little dappled afternoon shading may be welcomed. Avoid planting where the intense summer sun will reflect off a building or other surface unless you live in a cooler climate.
✅ Soil: Rich (compost!), acidic (check your soil pH to see if you need to add soil acidifier), moist, but well-draining is the most ideal conditions.
✅ Water needs: Consistently moist but not overly saturated for the first couple of years while the blueberry bush roots get established.
✅ Pruning: When the plant is dormant (winter/early spring), trim back any skinny or twiggy stems, leaving only the main stems that will produce your healthiest berries. It’s best to wait until the 3rd year to start pruning, though.
✅ The ornamental value of this blueberry is amazing! In fact, many people grow it just for the way it looks. The leaves are a bluish-green, and in late spring, large amounts of beautiful pink flowers make way for the clusters of small to medium-sized, juicy, sweet, dark blue blueberries that are ready for picking in early to mid-summer (May/June)!
✅ This dwarfed blueberry variety is also perfect for container growing!
✅ Sunshineblue blueberries are considered self-fertile but the harvest may be a little less. Consider planting another blueberry with the same bloom time (spring/early summer) to maximize your blueberry harvest. On average, expect to get around 10 pounds of fresh berries per season, per plant, with the right growing conditions.
🌸 Consider planting these with a shrub or tree that like the same growing conditions and are pollinator-friendly. Betty Magnolia, azaleas, or rhododendrons are perfect companions.
If you’re looking for the perfect blueberry for patio gardening, cottage gardens, edible landscaping, or just to enjoy watching the pollinators doing what they do, this is an excellent choice you won’t regret.

➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
