Sugar Maple (Eastern US Native)

🍁 The Sugar Maple: It’s one of America’s favorite trees for good reason. It puts on a color display in fall like few trees can with its vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows.
This tree’s beauty is more than skin deep, though. Sugar Maples help preserve soil quality, and pull water from deep in the soil, providing a hydration boost to nearby plants. Since they live 300 to 400 years, they’ll be doing great things for the environment for a long time! And…you won’t be spending landscaping money again any time soon, either. 🙂
Another reason to love them is that they are excellent shade trees and do perfectly well under the canopy of other larger trees. They are versatile!
They boast an Eastern US native status, offer shelter and food for wildlife, flowers that pollinators love, and beauty you can enjoy too. What’s not to love?
➡️ Ours are well-rooted sapling trees, around one to two feet tall (or more), currently growing in 2-gallon pots. They are dormant (no leaves) from late fall to early spring. They will be shipped without pots and will be bare-rooted when they are dormant, which is a great time to buy trees. Please see the last two photos for a size and quality reference before ordering. Thanks! See below for more information.

Description
Is a Sugar Maple tree (Acer Saccharum) right for you?
🚨🚨 **** Important note: Sorry, No Sales to Western, Territories, or Phyto-certificate states due to shipping restrictions in your state (Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho). I can also only ship to Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi during bare root season (late fall through early spring) due to Japanese Beetle regulations.
✅ Botanical name: Acer saccharum
✅ Growing zones: 3-8
✅ Mature size: 55 to 75 (average) feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide. SLOW growers. They only add 1 to 2 feet per year once established (after the first year or two)
✅ Light requirements: 4+ hours of sun daily. Do well as understory trees or on the northern side of your property.
✅ Soil: Slightly acidic pH is preferred, well-draining soil. They do like fertile soil so adding compost or other soil conditioners is great.
✅ Water: While they are young (the first few years) Sugar Maples need to be kept consistently moist (not soaking wet). Once established, these trees are much more drought tolerant. During hot and dry months, more water is needed.
✅ Fertilizer: Young Sugar Maples (like ours) benefit from a healthy dose of compost and do well with light feedings. Always use slow release fertilizers (NOT quick) to avoid root burn. These do well with a 10-10-10 slow release mix or a 10-4-6. Feed in very early spring or right after the leaves have dropped for the year in fall.
✅ Mulching: Definitely recommended. A several inch thick layer of high quality mulch in an 8-10 inch circle is perfect. Avoid the Sugar Maple stem by 4 inches or so to avoid rot.
🐝 Bees LOVE the greenish yellow blossoms in April/May.
🦌 These trees are NOT considered deer resistant so you may need to cage your young sapling tree if you have some 4-legged visitors with munchies.
✅ There are a number of pests and fungus that can attack Sugar Maples. Often times these are purely cosmetic and will not harm your tree. Other times, you may need to apply a treatment. Not all products are safe on Maples (such as Neem oil, Horticultural oil, etc) so be careful with application.
❤️ Sugar Maples have been one of my favorites for a long time. Are they yours too? If so, now you can have your very own 🙂 These young trees are strong, healthy, and ready for the ground! You’ll enjoy watching them grow year after year, even if it’s not as fast as we would like!
If you have any questions, I’m here to help the best I can! As a small family nursery, my goal is to offer the “personal touch” to show you that we care about your business. Customer service, and your support, sincerely matter to us. Thanks for looking!
➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
