The Soulanageana (Saucer) Magnolia is one impressively beautiful tree.  You may also know it by the name, “Saucer Magnolia tree,” due to its saucer-shaped fragrant flowers.

When this multi-stemmed tree is allowed to branch out and hang down while fully in bloom, it’s truly a sight to behold.  Ours are well-rooted, several years old, in 1-gallon pots ready to be planted in your yard!

Description

Is the Soulangeana Magnolia right for you?

Here’s what your new plant will need and what to look out for:

Mature size – I can grow to be 20 – 30 feet tall and spread out to 20 – 25 feet wide as well

Light requirements – I grow best in full sun but I can tolerate partial shade

Water requirements – When you first plant me & I’m growing up, keep me watered regularly.  Once I’m established, I can survive on less water but still prefer to be evenly moist – just not soggy.  When it’s hot summertime or it’s been dry, I will need more water.  Keep in mind that I don’t like either extreme – too dry or too wet.

Food requirements – It helps to add fertilizer into the ground when you are planting your magnolia. Saucer Magnolias do well when fertilized twice per year; once in the spring and once in the fall with a slow-release fertilizer. (affiliate)

Soil requirements – I need well-draining soil.  My preference is also for acidic, rich, loamy soil.  Clay soils are not ideal so add some peat moss or other compost material to help the soil drain better.

Pruning needs – Once my flowers have fallen off, I can be pruned.  Cut off any dead, injured limbs or limbs that are rubbing across one another. This is also a good time to shape me so that I maintain the form you’d like for me to have.
