These highly sought-after Cardinal Red Weigela shrubs are beloved for so many reasons, including being a bush that blooms so heavily its branches “weep” with the weight of all that blooming glory! This variety can also be very hard to find. They’re particularly beautiful when paired with other colorful weigela, like our Java Red.

These Red Weigela will also rebloom without you having to put the effort into deadheading. How amazing is that?!? A lot of folks also use weigela as a flowering privacy hedge because they are fast growing, even though these will lose their leaves in the wintertime.

There isn’t much to not love about weigela, to be honest!

✅ Botanical name: Weigela florida ‘Vanicekii’

✅ Growing zones: 4-8 (9 is possible)

✅ Mature size: 6-8 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide. When planting more than one, space these 6-8 feet apart. These are pretty fast growers.

✅ Light requirements: Weigela bloom best in full sun (8+ hours of sun daily), but can tolerate some light afternoon shading in hotter summer climates.

✅ Soil: Needs well-draining but can tolerate a wide range of soil types.

✅ Water: When freshly planted, soak the soil well. Keep the soil consistently moist (but not saturated) the first year or two while the roots get established. Once or twice per week watering should do fine, but more may be required during the hot summer months if it hasn’t rained. Once established, supplemental watering may not be needed. Rainfall could be plenty.

✅ Pruning: It’s best to do any pruning (if needed) after the weigela has finished blooming. Removing any dead or funky looking branches can be done throughout the year.

✅ Fertilizer: Best done in early spring before new growth begins. A balanced 10-10-10 type of food works best for these beautiful flowering shrubs. Follow the instructions on your label for best results.

🦋 🐝 Pollinators will LOVE you for having weigela in your landscape. You’ll enjoy sitting back and watching these beautiful butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and songbirds flock to this like it’s the best thing on earth!

🦌 But…for you folks out there who need a deer-resistant shrub, weigela is!

You genuinely can’t go wrong. There are several varieties of these Weigela available, and each one is special in its own right. This one is a stunning stand-alone shrub or it can be grouped for even more color impact. Even if you think you have a “black thumb,” this bush is for you!

➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
