New Jersey Tea Plant

$18.99

The New Jersey Tea Plant (Ceanothus americanus) is a highly sought-after small rounded native shrub that has also been used for centuries as a medicinal plant. Its gorgeous white clusters of flowers show off from May to July and remind me of a panicle hydrangea.  These make beautiful cut flowers.

These bushes also offer value to plants growing near them by increasing nitrogen in the soil.  Pick a good spot for them because their very deep roots make them difficult to move once established.   Those deep roots make these plants very drought-tolerant, though!

*Please* take a look at all the photos in our gallery. The last photo is an example of the plant you would receive in its dormant state.  They are around 12 inches tall and have a strong taproot with fine roots surrounding them. Young, healthy plants, that will establish well and thrive once they do!

From late fall to early spring, our plants will ship dormant (no leaves until spring) and bare-root (no pot and minimal dirt).

🐝 Pollinator magnet! Bees, butterflies, birds, and Hummingbirds will thank you for planting these in your yard.  Songbirds eat its seeds. Members of this plant genus also support specialized bees: Pseudopanurgus pauper and Pseudopanurgus virginicus.

🦋 Host plant for the Mottled Duskywing (a specialist butterfly), Spring and Summer Azure, and Eastern Tailed Blue butterflies. Also Monarchs.

➡️ You may have also heard these called Mountain Snowbell, Red Root (because of their red roots), Mountain Sweet, and Wild Snowball. These BEAUTIFUL small bushes are native to eastern and central North America. Many native plants aren’t the ‘prettiest’ to look at, but these are worthy of a front and center spot in any landscape. You also won’t find them everywhere you look! If you like unique, native, and medicinal plants, you don’t want to miss these.

💡 Fun fact: Dried leaves were used as a tea substitute in American Revolutionary War times, which is where the name, “New Jersey Tea,” comes from! Native Americans also used these leaves as a tea to treat respiratory infections, skin and digestive issues, spasms, and even snakebites!

These are a favorite for a reason! Many states have called this, “Wildflower of the Year” at one point or another 🙂 They’re a special choice. You can feel good knowing that not only will you have a beautiful plant to enjoy, but you’re doing our Earth a favor!

If you have any questions, I’m here to help the best I can! As a small family nursery, my goal is to offer the “personal touch” to show you that we care about your business. Customer service, and your support, sincerely matter to us. Thanks for looking!

➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
