Carolina Allspice, Sweetshrub (Native)
$14.99
Carolina Allspice, ‘Sweetshrub,’ is a gorgeous Southeast USA native shrub producing unique and showy red blooms that have fragrance hints of strawberry, pineapple, and banana, giving it the name, ‘Sweetshrub!’ Not many plants can make that claim to fame. 🙂
➡️ Ours are well-rooted, currently growing in 2 gallon pots. They are dormant (no leaves) from late fall to early spring. They will be shipped without pots and will be bare-rooted when they are dormant, which is a great time to buy plants. Please see the last photo for a size and quality reference before ordering. Thanks! See below for more information in the description.

If you love Southeast US native plants, fragrant flowers, unique blooms, and a neatly shaped shrub, Carolina Allspice/Sweetshrub might be right up your alley. These amazing bushes are also pollinator magnets and are a valuable addition to any landscape for wildlife.
✅ Botanical name: Calycanthus floridus
✅ Zones: 4-9
✅ Mature size: 6-12 feet tall and wide with a fairly quick growth rate
✅ Spacing: When planting more than one, give at least 5 feet of space between these and other shrubs. Since these grow 6-12 feet tall and wide, consider that spacing for around your home or other areas. Pruning choices will of course affect overall size and shape.
✅ Sunlight requirements: Full sun all the way down to deep shade. In hot climates, some shading is appreciated, especially in the afternoon. In full shade, the shape may be less rounded and dense.
✅ Soil: Needs well-draining but is adaptable to most. Rich soil is preferred so adding compost is very beneficial. Not fussy about soil pH.
✅ Water needs: Originally discovered growing along streambanks and shady woodlands, this bush prefers consistently moist soil. It can stand occasional flooding as well. Drought/dry conditions are hard on this shrub but it may survive in the infrequent drought once established.
✅ Pruning: To keep a nice rounded shape and to get rid of suckers (if you need to), cut these shrubs back right after they finish flowering. They bloom on old wood (last season’s growth) so cutting them too late in the year will cause a loss of flowers next season.
✅ Fertilizer: Apply a slow-release balanced tree and shrub food in spring for best results.
🌸 Bloom time can last between 3-4 weeks and typically occurs in May/June.
🦋 🐝 🐦⬛ Carolina Allspice, Sweetshrub, is an absolute favorite of pollinators. It’s a very important native shrub for any landscape. It is however deer resistant!
✅ VERY low maintenance plant in general. They have little to no issues with pests and disease, tolerate hot and cold conditions, and are just very easy to grow. They will spread by suckers so remove those if you’d rather it not naturalize an area.
✅ Best of all, these native shrubs are very versatile for use in your landscaping. Their dense growth habit makes for excellent privacy screening hedge rows, they are excellent for use around entryways or windows where you can savor the scent from their blooms, and they’re perfect for all types of gardens like pollinator, woodlands, or just native gardens in general.
We LOVE this bush and think you will too. Not all natives are ‘front and center types,’ but this one is. Lilacs have such a reputation for being highly fragrant but these can hold their own in that department in their own special way. If you love unique and native, don’t skip over this choice!
If you have any questions, I’m here to help the best I can! As a small family nursery, my goal is to offer the “personal touch” to show you that we care about your business. Customer service, and your support, sincerely matter to us. Thanks for looking!
➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
