Buttonbush Shrub (Native)
$13.49
If you’re not familiar with ButtonBush (Cephalanthus Occidentalis), prepare to meet one of the neatest plants you’ll ever meet. It’s a native shrub that produces these incredible pin-cushion-like white balls that have a scented flower head. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators absolutely love this plant! Because of this, ButtonBush has a very important purpose.
ButtonBush are water lovers so they do well around ponds, rain gardens, along streams, or anywhere it won’t dry out. In fact, it can be grown in water up to 3 feet deep! If planted in your landscape, just be sure to keep it watered. Otherwise, it is extremely low maintenance, doesn’t really require pruning, and has no serious issues with pests or disease.
Ours are well-rooted plants growing in either 1 or 2-gallon pots and would love a well-watered home with you! I don’t think you’ll regret having this unique beauty around you, and you’ll feel great about supporting the pollinators.
➡️ Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) are deciduous which means they are dormant with no leaves from late fall to early spring. During this time, we will ship bare-root (a great way to buy plants!). Please see the last photo in our gallery for an example of the quality you would receive to be sure you are happy before you order. Thanks! 🙂 See below for more information.

Is ButtonBush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) right for you?
🚨🚨 **** Important note: Sorry, No Sales to Western, Territories, or Phyto-certificate states due to shipping restrictions in your state (Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho). I can also only ship to Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi during bare root season (late fall through early spring) due to Japanese Beetle regulations.
This fun-to-grow shrub is native to the United States, low maintenance (if kept moist), and is a favorite of pollinators like butterflies, birds, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects. We desperately need more of these types of plants in our landscaping to keep our pollinators happy.
✅ Botanical name: Cephalanthus occidentalis
✅ Growing zone: 5-9
✅ Mature size: 5 to 12 feet tall and 3 to 8 feet wide. They grow pretty quickly at around 1 to 2 feet per growing season.
✅ Blooms: Fragrant white 1.5 inch wide pin-cushion-like flowers bloom from June to August. Pollinators absolutely love them!
✅ Light requirements: Full sun to partial shade (2+ hours per day). A little afternoon shade is best in hot summer climates. Flowering is best with at least 6 hours of sun.
✅ Soil: Very tolerant of most soil conditions except dry. Acidic soil is preferred. They do well with compost so feel free to add that into the planting hole and on the top soil mixed in.
✅ Water: They love it wet and can even grow in standing water up to 3 feet! Ponds, swamps, streambanks. Excellent for erosion control.
✅ Pruning: This is done in winter or early spring while the plant is dormant. You can remove up to a 1/3 of the branches to shape or encourage better blooming. If rejuvenation is needed, you can even cut these down to their base while they are dormant and they’ll come back great!
✅ These incredible native shrubs are unique, offer great wildlife value for waterfowl, birds, pollinators, and much more.
🦌 These are mostly deer-resistant. They may still chomp on it some but it isn’t their favorite!
This shrub is not one you see everywhere so your yard will be unique! You can also feel good about the benefits you’re providing for our pollinators. If you love butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds, the Button Bush will give you quite a show!
If you have any questions, I’m here to help the best I can! As a small family nursery, my goal is to offer the “personal touch” to show you that we care about your business. Customer service, and your support, sincerely matter to us. Thanks for looking!
➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
