These beautiful dwarf Magnolia trees are dormant (no leaves) from late fall to early spring. They will be shipped bare root (no pot with minimal dirt) when dormant. These are the actual trees you will be receiving!

Betty’s blooms are large, cup-shaped, and reddish-purple with white centers.  It’s quite a show when Betty Magnolia blooms before her leaves form.  In spring, those early leaves emerge with a copper-red tint and change to dark green as spring begins to turn into summer.  In fall, these leaves have beautiful hints of oranges and copper.  Multi-season interest applies to this magnolia.

✅ Botanical name: Magnolia liliiflora x Betty

✅ Zones: 4-8

✅ Mature size: 10-15 feet tall and wide

✅ Slower growing with a rounded shrub-like structure

✅ Bloom time: April-May

🐝 🦋 The sweet fragrance of Magnolia Betty’s blooms attracts bees and butterflies!

✅ Light requirements: Full sun to partial shade (4+ hours of sun daily)

✅ Water & Soil needs: Magnolias love organically rich soil so adding compost or humus is perfect. The soil does need to be well-draining and preferably consistently moist. pH preference is neutral to moderately acidic.

✅ Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch in a circle on top of the soil to keep moisture levels even and protect roots from temperature extremes (hot/cold). Avoid covering the magnolia stem.

✅ Fertilize in early spring as the buds begin to swell with a balanced, slow release, 10-10-10 type fertilizer. Osmocote also works well. Magnolia roots spread out so be sure to put the fertilizer on the ground up to 10 inches out from the center stem/trunk.

✅ Gorgeous leaves emerge with copper-red tints in spring, turn dark green by late spring and finally yellow to bronze-copper colors in fall. It’s a multi-season interest tree.

✅ Planting on the south side of your home is not recommended because this could cause your tree to bud early and be damaged by late frosts. Also, try for a sheltered location where excessive winds will be blocked or slowed. Magnolia roots don’t like to be disturbed much so finding a great location the first time is very helpful for long-term tree health.

✅ Pruning is rarely, if ever, needed. This is a beautiful low-maintenance tree.

✅ Magnolias can be susceptible to certain pests and diseases. However, do not treat with Neem oil as this tree is sensitive to it and will lose its leaves or be discolored. Horticultural oils can be helpful, if/when needed.

In our humble opinion, Betty Magnolia is one spectacular tree for smaller yards, low-maintenance landscaping, and anywhere that you can appreciate these gorgeous blooms. It’s a special one and we think you’ll love it too!
