Description
Are Steuben grape vines right for you?
This variety produces large, bluish-black, slip-skin grapes that are perfectly sweet, juicy, and slightly spicy, with many saying it has hints of honey or cranberry. It is a cross between Concord grapes and Iona, giving this berry its unique flavor. Beloved for its flavor, this grape makes an excellent snacking table grape or can be used to make juices or wine. This variety consistently produces two large clusters per shoot, producing an abundant harvest.
Generally, Steuben grape vines are pretty disease resistant and offer Fall interest when their leaves turn a bright yellow color. Do keep in mind, like grapes in general, they have a spreading habit. Grapes can also be a more high-maintenance plant to grow because they will require regular pruning to keep them producing fruit and to keep them healthy.
Self-pollinating. Quick grower. Lives around 20 years. Easily trained on trellis or arbor.
I can grow to be around 20 feet tall and my spread can reach 24 inches or more. I ripen between August and September.
Care Requirements:
Sun: 8+ hours of direct sun daily
Water & soil: Well-draining, loamy or sandy soil, consistently moist. Grapes don’t like wet feet. After planting, water heavily and then allow the soil to slightly (not overly) dry before watering again. When watering, focus on the root zone – not the grape leaves themselves. This can prevent many disease issues from occurring.
Fertilizer: Once in Spring and Summer. Slow-release fertilizers work well but grape vines will also benefit from having compost spread around the vine in Spring.
Pruning: Remove dead or damaged branches in late winter to early spring. Grape vines appreciate a good haircut. Experts recommend leaving 4-6 main canes and 6-8 lateral canes.
In general, Steuben is a fairly easy-to-grow vine that produces a strong harvest of delicious grapes with a unique flavor you’ll have a hard time getting enough of!
Best of all, if you have space for a grape arbor, this variety is perfect and will create a magical spot to sit & relax underneath.
