Saskatoon Serviceberry, Juneberry
$18.95
There is so much to love about the Saskatoon Serviceberry (Juneberry). These beautiful large shrubs (or small trees) are low-maintenance, North American native plants, mostly pest and disease-free, and they produce small but sweet berries that are beloved for eating raw and baking goodies! You might have to compete with the birds though because they love these too! 🙂
Saskatoon Juneberry is best for colder climates and is native to the Upper Midwest and Western USA. It’s perfect for edible landscaping or homesteaders.
Ours are currently growing in 2-gallon pots and are well-established, healthy starter plants. From late fall to early spring, these are shipped dormant (no leaves until spring) and bare-root (little to no soil). Please see below for more information.

If you’re searching for an easy-to-grow, native plant, Saskatoon Serviceberry (Juneberry) may be exactly what you’re looking for. In Spring, large clusters of fragrant white flowers fill the branches, followed by sweet berries in early Summer. In Fall, their oval-shaped leaves turn brilliant shades of reds and oranges, putting on a show that is sure to delight. In winter, their dense growing habit makes an appealing windbreak (if planted in rows close together), which people often use as a “living fence.” It’s a native shrub with multi-season interest.
đź’š Saskatoon Serviceberry is the perfect choice for those in a colder climate!
âś… Growing zone: 2-7 (8 is possible but not the most ideal)
âś… Mature size: 10 to 15 feet tall and wide on average. Growth rate is pretty quick at 1 to 2 feet per growing season once established. Space these around 10 feet apart if planting multiples.
âś… Light requirements: Full sun to partial shade (4-6+ hours daily)
âś… Soil: Loves acidic soil that is well-draining but moist. Once established, these are drought-tolerant and much more tolerant of poor soil conditions. Very adaptable. Perfect for woodland edges, stream banks, or in hedges. Excellent erosion control plant.
âś… Water: Average water needs (1-2 times per week) while getting established in the first year or two.
âś… Fertilizer: In early spring (as the serviceberry breaks dormancy), apply a balanced slow-release mix like 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 in a circle along the drip line of the branches – away from the main trunk. Water in and you’re done! Adding a bit of compost or soil conditioner to the planting hole is also fine.
âś… Mulching is highly recommended to protect plant roots from extreme hot or cold temperatures and to maintain even moisture levels. Apply a several inch thick layer in a circle 8-10 inches wide but avoid the plant stem by several inches to avoid rot.
âś… Will produce some fruit by itself but having 2 or more plants near each other helps improve berry harvest
âś… Juneberries are LOADED with nutrition. They’re an excellent source of iron (higher than blueberries), have excellent anti-cancer properties, and are high in potassium, vitamin C, and other critical vitamins for human health and wellness.
âś… Neem oil works well for pest and disease (fungal) control, if needed. Spray in the evening hours once the sun’s brightness is done for the day.
These gorgeous native shrubs or small trees are not only beautiful to look at but also a valuable food source for birds and humans alike. If you have the space to plant more than one, you’ll also enjoy the privacy these offer year-round. You can’t go wrong with these in our book! 🙂

In colder zones where the ground is currently frozen solid, it may be best to pot these up now and keep them in a cool basement, garage, or other unheated space that will stay above freezing but help keep the plant dormant. Water 2 times the first week. Keep consistently moist but not soggy after. Gradually “harden off” outdoors and plant once the ground is no longer frozen in the spring. Mulching helps insulate the roots and retain moisture as well.
If you live in a warmer zone where the ground is not yet frozen, you can go ahead and plant these now while dormant so they can get established. Heavy mulching is needed here as well. If the ground is frozen, treat it as you would in the colder zones by potting it up and waiting until early spring.
If you have any questions, I’m here to help the best I can! As a small family nursery, my goal is to offer the “personal touch” to show you that we care about your business. Customer service, and your support, sincerely matter to us. Thanks for looking!
➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
