Is Greek Oregano right for you?

Greek Oregano (Origanum vulgar ‘hirtum’) has a flavor that you won’t soon forget.  In Greek, the word oregano means, “Joy of the mountain,” and this powerful herb helps to create dishes that certainly bring a whole lot of joy.

And hey, even if you aren’t a fan of oregano’s flavor, you can still use it as a natural bug-repellant!  Plant some around your favorite sitting areas outdoors or rub the leaves on your wrists and ankles to release the oils.  It works! (Peppermint oil works well for this purpose too!)

Mature size: Up to 24 inches tall and 18 inches wide

Sun requirements: I need full sun to partial shade (4-8 hours of sun daily)

Water & soil:  Moist, well-draining soil.  I do not like for my roots to be bogged down with water.  It’s almost certain death!

Fertilizer: It’s not needed for me to be healthy.  If you really want to add some, you could try a slow-release balanced fertilizer or add a little compost to my soil in spring or early summer.  You could also occasionally (don’t overdo it) put some coffee grounds around me to boost my nitrogen intake.

Other Care Information:

  • I do have a spreading habit so if you don’t want me to do that, grow in containers
  • When harvesting, leave at least 4 to 6 pairs of leaves. It’ll help me fill out in a bushy form.
  • Hot temps and dry soil are fine with me once I’m established.  Keep me watered until then.
  • Harvest me before blooming in mid-summer for the most intense flavor
  • I attract beneficial insects and pollinators with my intense aroma filling the air
  • Planting me with vegetables or other plants that benefit from pollinators is a great idea!

I am rich in antioxidants, help fight off harmful bacteria in your body, have shown promise in fighting cancer, am anti-inflammatory, and an all-around powerhouse for your health!

Can Greek Oregano be grown indoors?

Yes, it can, but you must have enough bright light for it.  Consider a south-facing window with at least 6 – 8 hours of bright sunlight.  Or, if that’s not available, you can consider grow lights (affiliate) for your indoor plants as well.  In our home, we don’t get much bright natural light due to our surroundings so we have used grow lights with great success ourselves.

Good companion plants: I work well with other herbs like mint, rosemary, thyme, basil, lemon balm, and others. Cucumbers, strawberries, and tomatoes also work well.
