Is an Emmetts Pumpkin Japanese Maple right for you?
Emmets Pumpkin Japanese Maple is a very special tree. In early spring, its leaves are a beautiful reddish orange (salmon color) mixed with lighter green. In summer, its leaves change to a very vibrant green. Ours often show slightly purplish edging as well in the summer months. Come fall, however, oh my goodness — these large and unique leaves turn a beautiful display of oranges and reds that really stand out in any landscape!
Mature Size: 10 – 15 feet tall and 10 – 15 feet wide
Sun requirements: I prefer morning sun and sheltered afternoon sun (especially here where it’s hot!)
Water & soil: I like consistently moist but well-draining soil. I will get root rot if I sit in water so please make sure that I can breathe! 5 – 7 pH is ideal but I am not that fussy. Here on the Shore, I do pretty well!
Growth rate: I’m a fairly slow grower so I’ll take years to reach my full size. I also tend to grow in width as much as I do height, giving me a bushier appearance. Compared to other varieties in the Acer japonicum family, I’m on the smaller side.
Fertilizer: I don’t need much. In late winter or early spring (after the last frost), you can apply a slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote granules to keep me growing strong.
Other features:
- I am mostly resistant to deer, insects, and many diseases.
- I’m a very hardy tree that you’ll enjoy seeing for many years to come
- Please do not treat me with horticultural oils (i.e. Neem, etc). I will drop my leaves and may even die.
