Their blooms aren’t the only thing that will catch your attention, though. The light floral fragrance is pretty charming too. Their charm is also irresistible to hummingbirds and butterflies so sit back and watch the show!

**** Important note: Sorry, No Sales to Western, Territories, or Phyto-certificate states due to shipping restrictions in your state (Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho)

These Althea shrubs can be trained to grow as a tree or allowed to grow full to the ground. How you style it is up to you! The best part? They’re easy to grow, so even if you don’t think you have a ‘green thumb,’ you can successfully grow these!

What most people love about Rose of Sharon besides all the obvious reasons above is that they bloom from mid-summer into fall, long past when many other bloomers have given up the ghost for the year! It’s a lovely way to add long-lasting color to any landscape.

✅ Botanical name: Hibiscus syriacus ‘Double Purple’

✅ Zones: 5-9

✅ Mature size: 6 – 12 feet tall and 6 – 10 feet wide. The growth rate is 1-2 feet per year.

✅ Spacing: When planting more than one, space them at least 6 -10 feet apart.

✅ Light: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun daily)

✅ Soil/Water: Very adaptable to most soil types. Does need well-draining and consistently moist. Slight drought tolerance once established (after the first year or two)

✅ Pruning: Cutting back these shrubs after the leaves have dropped in fall and before the buds form in spring helps create healthy growth and bigger, better blooms. Some people cut these back almost to the ground. Others just cut out around 2/3 of the height. These low-maintenance flowering shrubs are pretty easy-going. If you don’t choose to prune at all and just let it grow naturally, that’s okay too.

✅ Fertilizer: Apply a granular-type rose food in early spring for best growth.

🦋 🐝 Pollinators LOVE Rose of Sharon and will be grateful to you for planting some of these beauties in your yard. Butterflies and hummingbirds will be regular visitors!

✅ VERY low maintenance and versatile shrub that is great as a stand-alone ornamental bush or plant these in groups for a stunningly beautiful flowering hedge row. Also perfect for pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, around decks/patios, and around foundations to make your home the talk of the town! 🙂

✅ Rose of Sharon is mostly pest and disease-free, making these a very hardy choice. Japanese Beetles do like these so you may need a preventative treatment to avoid damage.

🦌 Double Purple Althea (Rose of Sharon) are also deer resistant! Hooray for that! 🙂
