Our native Black Cherry tree (prunus serotina) is an absolutely gorgeous tree offering multi-season interest. It has beautiful yellow Fall color, clusters of white blooms in the Spring, and edible berries in the Summer that birds love! Or, you can even cook them and use them for jams and jellies!
It is considered to be the largest and most important native cherry tree because of its beauty and because it is beloved for the wood in furniture making and other purposes. Standing 50 – 80 feet tall at maturity, I also make the perfect shade tree!
Ours are saplings, around 1 to 3 feet tall, about 2 -3 years old, currently potted in 2 – 3 gallon pots, and very ready to be in the ground! Please see below for more information.

The Black Cherry tree is arguably one of the most beautiful flowering native trees available. However, its value is even more important than its natural beauty. These trees are perfect shade trees, offer nesting for wildlife, are a larval host for many butterflies, love the mountainous areas, and make the perfect addition to pollinator gardens or edible landscaping.
Songbirds adore the fruit produced on these trees in late summer. Their small cherry fruits are edible to humans as well, and many people love baking with them.
✅ Botanical name: Prunus serotina
✅ Growing zone: 2-8 (9 is possible)
✅ Mature size: 60 to 80 feet tall and 30 to 60 feet wide. As young trees, they grow quickly, adding around 2 feet per growing season. They will slow down as they age. You can keep them smaller by cutting them way back, almost to the ground, every 2 or 3 years.
✅ Flowering: Beautifully fragrant, white flowers adorn the branches from April to May.
✅ Light requirements; Full sun (6+ hours daily is preferred)
✅ Soil: They love rich organic soil so they’ll love you for adding plenty of compost or soil conditioners. They’ll also need well-draining soil. They are highly adaptable to pH, and can grow in alkaline, neutral or acidic soil. Alkaline seems to produce the tastiest berries, though.
✅ Water: While getting established in the first year or two, keep consistently moist but not soggy. Once established, they can be more drought-tolerant but they’d prefer to be planted in north or east-facing positions where the soil stays a little more moist.
✅ Mulching is highly recommended. Apply a several-inch thick layer in an 8 to 10 inch circle but avoid the tree stem by several inches to avoid rot.
✅ Fertilizer needs are very low for these. You can apply a balanced slow-release (like a 10-10-10) during spring while the tree is young to boost nutrients, if you prefer. Compost or soil conditioners is most helpful.
✅ Like most cherries, Black Cherry trees (Prunus serotina) can be susceptible to a variety of funguses, pests, or diseases. We have found that an application of Neem oil in the evening hours works very well if needed.
🦌 Black cherry trees are considered to be deer-resistant! I know so many of y’all are glad to hear that!
One of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen was a long row of these gorgeous native trees planted together. I think you’ll love them too for many years to come because these natural wonders live for 80 to 100 years. Some have even thrived beyond that!

In colder zones where the ground is already frozen, it may be best to pot these up now and keep them in a cool basement, garage, or other unheated space that will stay above freezing but help keep the plant dormant. Water twice the first week. After that, keep consistently moist. Gradually “harden off” outdoors and plant once the ground is no longer frozen in the spring. Mulching helps insulate the roots and retain moisture as well.
If you live in a warmer zone where the ground is not yet frozen, you can plant these now while they are dormant so they can get established. Heavy mulching is also needed here. If the ground is frozen, treat it as you would in the colder zones by potting it up and waiting until early spring.
If you have any questions, I’m here to help the best I can! As a small family nursery, my goal is to offer the “personal touch” to show you that we care about your business. Customer service, and your support, sincerely matter to us. Thanks for looking!
➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
