Is the American Hazelnut shrub right for you?
🚨🚨 **** Important note: Sorry, No Sales to Western, Territories, or Phyto-certificate states due to shipping restrictions in your state (Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho). I can also only ship to Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi during bare root season (late fall through early spring) due to Japanese Beetle regulations.
➡️ 🚨 Please also note that due to beneficial insects, there may be some chew holes in the leaves. This is purely cosmetic and will not harm your Hazelnut in the future.
If you are looking to create a more self-sustaining landscape and/or love native plants, this one is worth considering!
American Hazelnut (Corylus Americana) are prized for their sweet, earthy, easy to crack, small hazelnut kernels. Best of all, you can start harvesting nuts as early as 2-5 years. However, keep in mind that even though I’m considered self-fertile, at least 2 hazelnut shrubs will be required for cross-pollination which increases your nut harvest.
Also known as the American filbert, this multi-stemmed shrub is native to the Eastern United States and is usually very low maintenance once established.
✅ Botanical name: Corylus Americana
✅ Growing zones: 4-9
✅ Mature size: 6 – 12 feet tall and 10 – 15 feet in spread
✅ Sun requirements: I need at least 4-6+ hours of direct sun each day. In hot summer climates, consider planting me in an area with dappled sun for the afternoon. Morning sun is great!
✅ Water & soil: I prefer moist, well-draining soil. I can tolerate a variety of soil conditions, but I do prefer loamy. For the first year, give me about 1 inch of water weekly. In my second year and beyond (established), water me only if the top 2 inches of soil feel dry.
✅ Fertilizer: I’m low fuss. In fact, I don’t really like to be fertilized because too much fertilizer will affect my nut production. If anything, you could consider adding some manure after I’m around 2 – 3 years of age.
✅ Pruning: To keep your American filbert healthy and disease-free, pruning is important. Some excellent instructions can be found at Oregon State University.
Other Information:
- I’m not a fan of high winds. Please plant me in an area where I will be somewhat sheltered from this!
- I put out suckers and these need to be removed to prevent me from getting overcrowded and developing crown issues. Create new plants with the suckers elsewhere or even give them to family & friends.
- I can be a victim of leaf rollers, filbert worms and weevils, and bacterial or fungal disease. If you do see signs of something being wrong, give me a treatment with neem oil or other related products before the issue gets worse.
- I’m a fairly fast grower which makes me excellent in use as a privacy screen
- I bloom from February through March and my nuts can be harvested from September – October.
- I am not deer resistant. Wildlife loves me as a shelter and food source.
- My Fall color is beautiful with colors ranging from happy yellow to deep wine red.
- I provide year-round interest with my colors, fruits, and my impressive dangling yellowish-brown catkins in late winter into early spring. Because my catkins release pollen, pollinators love me!
Good companion plants: Butterfly weed, Virginian Witch Hazel, Garlic, Primrose, or other plants that attract pollinators.

➡️ I do my best to package your plants with the utmost care and love. Roots will be wrapped in damp paper with a plastic layer secured over top to hold in moisture. We always put “live plant stickers” on your box in hopes that UPS will indeed handle your box with love. We also ship in the quickest (affordable) manner possible to ensure your new plant babies get in your hands as soon as possible. We do not use USPS because we have seen too many long delays which makes for unhappy plants and customers. 🙂 Shipping occurs Monday and Tuesday – sometimes Wednesday – if you are close enough for a Friday delivery. We do this to prevent your plants from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. If there are major issues with your order, please reach out. We care about your happiness. ❤️
